Request & response

An RTI was filed with ISRO HQ on 15 September 2026 asking for EOS-05 payload, spacecraft and orbit details. The reply came on 30 October 2026. ISRO shared the payload configuration, mass, mission life, power, orbital slot, injection orbit and delta-v figures. It declined to share instrument design specifications (Q3, Q4) and mission requirement details (Q6), saying both are classified.

Key figures

  • Payloads: 4 (MX-VNIR, HyS-VNIR, HyS-SWIR, MX-LWIR)
  • Lift-off mass: 2367.1 kg (propellant 1128.4 kg)
  • Orbital slot: 85.5° E
  • Injection orbit: 170 km × 28,934 km at 19.28° inclination (sub-GTO)
  • Orbit raising: 3 manoeuvres, total Δv 1044.6 m/s
  • Mission life: 7 years; end-of-life power about 2000 W
  • Difference from EOS-03: adds the MX-LWIR payload

Questions & Responses

Q1, Q2, Q5, Q9: Payload configuration, spectral channels, GSD, IFOV, thermal/mid-wave IR
EOS-05 has 4 payloads: Multispectral in Visible and Near Infrared (MX-VNIR), Hyperspectral in Visible and Near Infrared (HyS-VNIR), Hyperspectral in Shortwave Infrared (HyS-SWIR), and Multispectral in Longwave Infrared (MX-LWIR).

  • MX-VNIR: 42 m resolution, 495 km swath, 6 bands, 0.45–0.875 µm
  • HyS-VNIR: 320 m resolution, 163 km swath, 158 bands, 0.4–0.87 µm
  • HyS-SWIR: 191 m resolution, 191 km swath, 256 bands, 1.0–2.50 µm
  • MX-LWIR: 1180 m resolution, 378 km swath, 6 bands, 7.1–13.5 µm

Q3: Primary mirror aperture, optical configuration, focal ratio
Q4: Detector type, array format, pixel pitch
Not shared. ISRO said the design specifications are classified.

Q6: Designed revisit interval (selected area and full Indian landmass)
Not shared. ISRO said the mission requirements are classified.

Q7: Mission life and end-of-life power
The designed mission life is 7 years. End-of-life power generation is about 2000 W.

Q8: Lift-off mass and propellant mass
The lift-off mass is 2367.1 kg, of which 1128.4 kg is propellant.

Q10: Geostationary longitude slot
85.5° East.

Q11: Payload differences from EOS-03 (GSLV-F10, Aug 2021)
Yes, they differ. EOS-05 carries a Multispectral Longwave Infrared (MX-LWIR) payload in addition to the EOS-03 payloads.

Q12: GISAT programme designation (GISAT-1A or GISAT-2)
ISRO said only that it is designated as EOS-05.

Q13: GSLV-F17 target injection orbit and reason for sub-GTO
The target injection orbit was 170 km × 28,934 km at 19.28° inclination. The sub-GTO was planned considering the launch vehicle and satellite configuration.

Q14: Orbit raising manoeuvres and delta-v
Three orbit raising manoeuvres were planned. The total delta-v needed to reach the final geostationary slot is 1044.6 m/s.
